With its subtle yet distinctive aroma, marjoram stands out among herbs! For us Cretans, it’s the perfect companion to malotira—together, they form one of the island’s most beloved herbal blends. Now, you too can add the wonderful scent of our marjoram to your collection and enjoy a truly traditional taste of Crete!

Hot Herbal Tea

  1. Place 1g of dried herb (about one tablespoon) into a container with a lid.*

  2. Add 200ml (one cup) of hot water at around 90°C.*

  3. Let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the herb to release its hidden strength. The longer it steeps, the more intense the flavor.

  4. Remove the herb from the container.

Your herbal tea is ready to enjoy! If you prefer a sweeter taste, feel free to add a touch of honey.

*The water should be just below boiling to avoid losing the herb’s essential oils through steam. A covered container helps trap both the properties and the aroma, preserving the full experience in your warm cup.

Iced Herbal Tea

Follow the same steps as for the hot tea, with one simple change: double the amount of herb. Once ready, pour the tea over a glass full of ice and enjoy it plain or lightly sweetened with honey!

Known as “matzórana” here in Crete, marjoram is a charming evergreen shrub with delicate leaves and small blossoms. Although it belongs to the same botanical family as oregano and dittany, it has a distinctly unique and recognizable aroma all its own.

Beyond its use in flavorful herbal teas, marjoram is a fantastic addition to a wide range of culinary creations. To preserve its subtle and refined taste, it’s best added at the end of cooking. Try it in tomato sauces, marinades, pasta dishes, pizzas, and grilled meats—it adds a warm, aromatic touch that enhances every bite.
