Sparemit is the herb that graced our grandmothers’ yards. We awaken our fragrant childhood memories by enjoying its fresh aroma in our culinary creations or as a herbal tea. In addition to our childhood memories, we also benefit from its unique healing properties!
1.Place 1-2g of dried herb in a container that closes*.
2.Add 200ml (a cup) of hot water, temperature 90oC*.
3. We wait for three to five minutes, allowing the herb to bring out the hidden
power from within! The time depends on how “strong” we want our
drink, the longer we leave it the stronger.
4. Remove the herb from the container.</p >
Our drink is ready to enjoy! If we prefer sweeter flavors, we add a little honey.
* We want our water to be just before the boiling point in order not to lose the essential oils of our herb with the vapors, while the container must be closed in order to capture properties and aromas in our hot mug.
We follow the same steps as in the preparation of hot with only difference is that we double the dose of the herb. At the end, we add our tea to a glass full of ice and enjoy it plain or with a little honey!
The name of mint comes from the word “ediosmos” which means pleasant smell. It is mainly used in cooking, standing out indeed for its characteristic aroma! Mint was already cultivated since the Minoan era and was one of the herbs gathered in the storerooms of the palaces. It was also used for the preparation of perfumes.
Today we flavor our salads and burgers, we give its characteristic aroma to pies, compotes, fruit salads and any culinary creation to which we want to give a little of the freshness of mint. We make herbal tea to take advantage of its medicinal properties, while in Crete we use it to flavor our traditional Easter cookies!
