Chamomile offers remarkable beautifying benefits for your skin and face, thanks to its natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping to soothe irritation and promote a youthful complexion.

Why is Chamomile a Useful Beauty Ingredient?

Before we dive in, you must want to know why chamomile is a useful beauty ingredient. It’s because some of the most beneficial properties of chamomile – like its antioxidants and amino acids – can penetrate below the skin surface into deeper layers of the skin.[1]

As a result, many people experience the following chamomile benefits for the skin and face…

Five Incredible Chamomile Benefits for Your Skin

  • Chamomile soothes and softens the skin

Chamomile has been used since the time of the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Egyptians to soothe skin. Now, modern research proves that chamomile contains compounds that give it soothing and healing properties.[2]

As a result, you can often find chamomile in cosmetic products designed for sensitive skin.[3]

At tofillo we find that applying a cold compress of chamomile, using our Chamomile Tea, makes for a great home remedy when our skin needs a bit more love and care!

  • Chamomile helps reduce inflammation in the skin

Another great chamomile benefit for skin is that it can help reduce inflammation of the skin. This is beneficial for skin conditions like sunburn or acne.

A study in 2010 showed that chamomile extract had such a noticeable effect on reducing inflammation, that the researchers were able to recommend its use as a therapeutic anti-inflammatory agent.[4]

Indeed, chamomile’s ability to reduce inflammation (both by drinking and by applying it topically) is supported in German regulations. The German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices Commission E has approved the use of chamomile for treating skin inflammation.[5]

That’s a pretty great form of approval!

  • Chamomile has properties that help with anti-aging

In another article for Chamomile we explored how chamomile contains an abundance of antioxidants, especially flavonoids and phytochemicals.[6] Well these antioxidants provide some crucial anti-aging benefits too!

Antioxidants fight ‘free radicals’ in our bodies which can, depending on the circumstances, contribute to faster, visible aging.

By drinking chamomile tea or applying it topically, you’re providing your skin with a lot of these antioxidants and could help to slow down the aging process in your skin.

  • Chamomile can protect against environmental damage to the skin

Those same antioxidants that help fight aging, can also help protect against environmental damage.

Our skin comes under a lot of stress from the environment around us (think: harsh weather, sun, pollution). This environmental stress can lead to dark spots, dryness and premature aging.

Because of chamomile’s antioxidants – such as flavonoids, terpenoids and polyphenols – it can help to protect from this damage by fighting free radicals caused by environmental stress.

At tofillo we feel that our skin looks and feels healthier in the summer (when UV rays and pollution are at their highest) when we enjoy our Chamomile Tea on ice!

  • Chamomile can help with wound-healing

An interesting chamomile benefit for the skin is its ability to help in healing wounds. Chamomile has been used to help with the treatment and healing of wounds for centuries.[7] The science now supports this.

There are various studies that show chamomile’s ability to heal wounds faster than regular corticosteroids and that it has effective anti-bacterial properties.

One study in 2008 showed that topical application of chamomile helped heal wounds up to nine days faster than wounds treated with corticosteroids.[8]

So while chamomile by itself isn’t enough to treat a wound, there is strong evidence to suggest that it can help heal the wound faster.

* Remember to always seek medical advice before using chamomile topically on a wound.

Three Incredible Chamomile Benefits for Your Face

We explored some amazing chamomile benefits for skin in the section above. These included soothing, anti-aging and protection against environmental damage.

Of course, all these benefits apply equally to the skin on your face as well as your body! But here are a few of chamomile’s beauty benefits specifically for your face…

  1. Chamomile can help to brighten your face

We all want the skin on our faces to be clear and bright! Well chamomile can help us get there in two ways.

First, by drinking chamomile tea you get soothing, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits which help with keeping your skin calm and clear from the inside-out. Second, by applying chamomile topically you can support brightening your facial skin.[9]

So it’s not a bad step to add into your beauty routine!

  1. Chamomile can help reduce hyperpigmentation on the face

Chamomile has astringent properties.[10] This means that it cleanses facial skin well, helps dry out oil and gradually fades scars, which can help reduce hyperpigmentation.

We all dread the hyperpigmentation left on our faces from a breakout. Because of chamomile’s astringent properties, it can work to gradually fade hyperpigmentation and acne scars on our faces when it’s used regularly.

  1. Chamomile can help with acne and breakouts

Chamomile for Skin and breakouts

We’ve seen how chamomile has great anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties. It packs quite a punch! Well, did you know that because of these properties, chamomile can sometimes help treat acne?

While chamomile alone can’t resolve all cases of acne, it can offer a gentle and mild treatment option for some acne cases and other, milder breakouts.

Because of its astringent, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, chamomile helps to gently cleanse the skin. And with its anti-oxidant properties, it helps to speed up cell regeneration which helps clear the skin.[11]

That’s something to keep in mind when you next have a breakout!

Now that you know about some of the great beauty benefits of chamomile for the skin and face, you might be wondering how to obtain those benefits!

At tofillo we love to drink our Chamomile Tea for beauty benefits, but we also love to use it to for topical use.

Here is one method we use to make a topical preparation:

  1. Place 25g of tofillo Chamomile Tea in a bowl with a wide rim
  2. Warm 230ml water up to 900C
  3. Add the hot water to the Chamomile Tea, cover the bowl and allow to infuse until the water has cooled
  4. Remove the chamomile flowers
  5. Apply the infusion to skin using either a washcloth or a spray bottle
  6. Leave on for 15 minutes and then rinse off

* Always patch test any product when using on your skin for the first time

These are just a few of the great beauty benefits chamomile can offer – and now you have one example of how to add it to your beauty routine! We hope you found this article useful.
